Corus invests in new plant at Baylis Recycling site to extract 1,500 tonnes of steel a year from mixed plastics and cans. Mixed waste tonnage is up to 40% higher than plastics-only and will help local councils hit recycling targets more quickly, say Baylis.

20 June 2005 -- Corus is to invest in new plant at Baylis Recycling's site to extract an estimated 1,500 tonnes of steel per annum from the 100 tonnes a week of mixed plastics and cans Baylis will receive, it was announced today. An industrial magnet and can baler provided by Corus using steel PRN revenue will enable the Environment Agency-accredited plastics reprocessor to extract steel cans from incoming mixed plastics and cans.

The deal follows Baylis Recycling's recent installation of a two-tonnes-per-hour sorting system that enables clients to supply post-consumer mixed waste consisting of plastic bottles and cans. "Our mixed stream recycling capability will help local councils to reach their recycling targets more quickly, as the weight of mixed plastic bottles and cans - the transportable tonnage - is typically 40% higher than plastics alone," says Baylis Recycling managing director Chris Baylis.

Stephen Howard, Corus' Recycling Development Representative comments: "Corus is delighted to be able to supply Baylis with new equipment to help increase the efficiency of their sorting process.  The increase in extracted steel tonnages that has already been achieved is testament to the recycling performance of steel packaging materials."

This latest enhancement to its service follows Baylis' installation earlier this year of a plastics recycling facility valued at £3 million, and featuring washing and flaking lines with a reprocessing capacity of up to 15,000 tonnes per annum.

Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) is Corus' centre of technical and communications expertise on steel packaging recycling. It aims to facilitate and promote the recovery and recycling of all types of steel packaging in the UK. Its objectives are to provide an end market for the recovered steel, to increase the recycling infrastructure through the strategic application of PRN revenue, to provide advice and technical information to public, private and not-for-profit organisations on recovery schemes and to raise awareness among consumers and the commercial sector of the recycling achievements of steel packaging.
